The RONALD REAGAN Sculpture “OUR AMERICAN LEGACY” by Vel Miller

OUR AMERICAN LEGACY is a bronze sculpture Vel was commissioned to do for a Paso Robles ranch family who were friends of Ronald Reagan. The sculpture was taken from a photo in 1965. President Reagan was just beginning his political career and was invited to ride in the Pioneer Parade in Paso Robles, Ca. He rode his friend’s horse in a saddle once owned by the cowboy and silent film actor William S. Hart. The saddle & gear are embellished with hearts. Ronald Reagan loved riding and having been a Cavalry Officer was a skilled horseman who had a lifetime love of horses. Ronald Reagan was pleased with the fact that he was riding in a Pioneer Parade and wearing deerskin pioneer clothing all of which matched his own pioneer spirit.

Vel has created a special edition of the sculpture with a base embossed with the state of California under the horse’s feet and some of President Reagan’s quotes around the bottom of the base. One of his quotes on the base of OUR AMERICAN LEGACY is “There is nothing better for the inside of a man than the outside of a horse.” Ronald Reagan as you know went on to become Governor of California and later our most respected and loved President who brought pride and belief in America back to the American People. Vel is proud to have been given the honor to portray him at one of his most favorite times.
